LAGOM mini Moonshine Burrs Event - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is this event about?

This is an all-new event (first in a series), and a new concept that we’re exploring in an effort to engage with our users (you) and the community!

Through this (and future) events, our active users will be provided with opportunities to be a part of our product development process, as well as being rewarded with early access to some of the new exciting things we’re bringing!

For our very first event, we’re extending an invitation to early Beta-Testing of our newly developed burrs for LAGOM mini. Up to 30 participants will be given the chance to receive the new burrset - LAGOM mini Moonshine burrs. If selected, you will be one of the first fews to access to our new burrs for LAGOM mini and to provide some feedbacks (directly or indirectly).

p/s: If you have any ideas for fun events, let us know too!

How do I participate in this event?

From April 13th (today) to April 26th , a Google Form link to a survey will be made available (link below). You just need to fill in the form (should take no more than 5-10 minutes to fill in) to put your name in for the selection round. Acceptance of entry submission will end on April 26th, 11:59pm (EST). Selected participants will be notified and contacted on April 30th, and the next steps for getting the new burrs will be provided via email.

Am I eligible?

To be considered for the beta-testing event, you need to be an active/current Lagom Mini user. You’re also expected to have a basic level of technical competency (ability to operate hand-tools such as wrench, and to follow instruction etc.) - as disassembly and reinstallation of burrs will be required. An instruction/guide for burrs installation will be provided - but to avoid damaging your grinder, we only ask if you’re comfortable in doing so. If this event is not the right fit for you, feel free to participate in the survey too to provide some feedback to us (we love to hear from you).

Lastly, to make the most out of this beta testing, we also hope that there’ll be some form of feedback upon your testing. The route/channel of feedback can be chosen per your comfort level - you can either share the results with us or directly share with the community which we’re happy to follow/watch along.

Is there any restriction on participating country(ies)?

No, there isn’t! If we have shipped a LAGOM mini to you in the past, then we can ship the burrs too! The burrset itself will be of no cost (RRP approx: USD 85 + shipping), and is available for a subsidised shipping cost of USD 10-15 (TBD depending on recipient’s country).

What is this Moonshine burrset?

If you’ve been following us, you may know that we’ve been dabbling in the land of burrs development late last year. Moonshine is one of our new propietary processes that we’re experimenting with – it is an improved burrs manufacturing process based on our experience with Obsydian burrs. During the burrs manufacturing phase, we have added new polishing steps - resulting burrs that looked extremely polished and shiny, like moonlight – hence the inspiration of the name. We believe that this may have some microscopic effects on the burr cutting surfaces and hence influence the resulting grind distribution. From our internal testing, burrs subjected to the new process resulted in a noticeable reduction in fines, and a narrower range in grind distribution (based on sifting) - more grind particle in the target grind size. In the cup, we believe it highlights the flavour clarity and presents the acidity in an elegant manner, which pairs well with high quality light roasted coffee. However, this is also where we find it to be exciting - to receive your input and for you to be part of Option-O Beta Tester team!

How does this differ from the current Obsydian 48mm burrs?

At the moment, we think of this Moonshine burrs as a potential complementary burrset to the Obsydian burrs – again, this is why we’re interested in hearing from the community, as different burrs may appeal to different groups! In our in-house testing, we find that burrs with Moonshine-processing provides a narrower grind distribution, with relatively fewer fines. With our preference, it really shines for filter-brewing - the brew profile tends to taste cleaner, with high clarity, acidity are more elegant and appears to be sparkly/brighter and yet complex. This is as opposed to Obsydian burrs that presents cups that are relatively more blended, with more body (the Obsydian itself provides a high-clarity presentation too so these are difference only noticeable by side-by-side comparison). At a similar grind setting, we interestingly found the Obsydian burr to be slightly faster in grinding.

We look forward to hearing from you!
